In June 2007, Mario Olivi, a former computer programmer, switched gears and opened The Olive Tap, a retail store in downtown Downers Grove that features olive oils, vinegars, salts and seasonings and gift baskets. Given the contrast of his former work with the current retail venture, Olivi appears to be a man who has reinvented himself.

Sports feature: When December arrived with the first lash of winter, Tom Pukstys couldn't help but smile. He was toasty warm, even though he was in a space seemingly as big as all outdoors -- 88,000 square feet of emerald turf and running, hitting and throwing space laid out before him. Bo Jackson's Elite Sports Dome, which officially opened Dec. 13, has a way of untethering athletes in the snow belt.

Boys basketball: Montini opened the week in a big way and it closed it in an equally impressive fashion. The Broncos followed up on winning the Dvorak Invitational by nearly 40 points with a 30-point dual meet victory at Providence on Dec. 27.

Girls basketball: Michelle Bilek didn't score a point on Dec. 27, but she played a big role in Loyola winning the Suburban Holiday Showcase. With the host Ramblers clinging to a four-point lead, the 5-foot-8-inch senior guard grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds off missed free throws as Loyola held off Montini 53-48 to extend its winning streak to 12 games.

'A man in sand'
In his most recent blog posts, Steve Panella shows a series of self-portraits in which his eyes were closed. His head is illuminated and his face looks peacefully at rest. The images are eerily foreboding, and they are his last. The 34-year-old artist died Nov. 29 from multiple, self-inflicted stab wounds.

The steel gate looks like it was designed to restrain a charging rhinoceros. A scuffed sheet of plexiglass blocks the view of the creature that lies beyond the 3-inch-thick bars; it appears only as a big, snorting, blob-like thing. Before he opens the gate, Mark Gonka makes a request to a visitor: Don't stand between the animal and the water.

Wheaton retirees are the oldest on 'Biggest Loser'
When Estella and Jerry Hayes, both 63, retired from their respective careers as nurse and engineer in 2000 and moved back to Wheaton from California to be close to their children and grandchildren, they didn't envision spending their golden years severely overweight and out of breath. Yet Jerry has had myriad health problems related to his weight of 369 pounds and Estella, who weighs 242, has found herself short of breath just climbing the stairs.
