In addition to practicing with a licensed instructor and accumulating 30 hours of classroom instruction, teens seeking their Illinois license must now spend at least 50 hours driving with a parent or guardian. Illinois legislators increased the restrictions on teen drivers in an attempt to reduce traffic crashes and fatalities involving young drivers. It seems to be working.

Girls Basketball: If Gina Nolan's next 100 victories are this easy, the Geneva girls basketball coach might consider coaching from a lounge chair. Nolan picked up her 100th victory at Geneva on Saturday night as her undefeated Vikings (15-0) danced all over Batavia, 54-33.

Boys Basketball: Kaneland used its height advantage to knock off Yorkville 61-48 Saturday in Western Sun Conference action. With 6-foot-9-inch junior Dave Dudzinski and 6-7 senior Christian Dillon in the starting lineup, the Knights generally have a height advantage over most teams they face. But in Saturday's 61-48 Western Sun Conference win over Yorkville, Kaneland gave future opponents even more to worry about.

Girls Basketball: When the best player on Kaneland's girls basketball team, four-year varsity performer Katie Hatch, went down 2:27 into a Western Sun Conference game against Yorkville on Saturday, the Knights knew they were in for a unusual night.

'A man in sand'
In his most recent blog posts, Steve Panella shows a series of self-portraits in which his eyes were closed. His head is illuminated and his face looks peacefully at rest. The images are eerily foreboding, and they are his last. The 34-year-old artist died Nov. 29 from multiple, self-inflicted stab wounds.

Batavia Enterprises at 50
When Austin Dempsey joined the family business of Batavia Enterprises, company President Dan Stellato counseled the young man to always keep a pair of old shoes handy. "Yeah, Dan told me that with 50 properties, you never know when you're going to have to go up on a tar roof. It'd be shame to ruin a good pair of shoes," said Dempsey.

Wheaton retirees are the oldest on 'Biggest Loser'
When Estella and Jerry Hayes, both 63, retired from their respective careers as nurse and engineer in 2000 and moved back to Wheaton from California to be close to their children and grandchildren, they didn't envision spending their golden years severely overweight and out of breath. Yet Jerry has had myriad health problems related to his weight of 369 pounds and Estella, who weighs 242, has found herself short of breath just climbing the stairs.
