A break in the weather gave workers the opportunity to smooth the road into 2009. "We were out patching this morning and we're going to keep patching as long as it stays dry," Mike Eulitz, the roadways engineer for the city of Joliet, said of the campaign to eradicate potholes on the streets of the town. Fluctuating temperatures not only exacerbate potholes -- melting ice water seeps into cracks, expanding when it freezes again and busting up the street -- but makes them even more difficult to fix.
