Boys basketball: The little man in the backcourt picked a big time to find his jump shot. Deadre Owens broke out of a season-long scoring slump in Plainfield Central's 57-50 victory over Romeoville in the large-school division championship game at the 31st annual Lemont Christmas Classic on Dec. 29.

Boys basketball commentary: Nearing the season's halfway mark, some people are calling Plainfield North the Cinderella of the high school basketball world. The glass slipper fits the Tigers in the context that they never before had reached the Final Four in a tournament as prestigious as the one staged annually at Pontiac.

Boys basketball: Cully Payne hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to propel Schaumburg to a 50-48 win over Plainfield North in the semifinals at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.

'A man in sand'
In his most recent blog posts, Steve Panella shows a series of self-portraits in which his eyes were closed. His head is illuminated and his face looks peacefully at rest. The images are eerily foreboding, and they are his last. The 34-year-old artist died Nov. 29 from multiple, self-inflicted stab wounds.

Wheaton retirees are the oldest on 'Biggest Loser'
When Estella and Jerry Hayes, both 63, retired from their respective careers as nurse and engineer in 2000 and moved back to Wheaton from California to be close to their children and grandchildren, they didn't envision spending their golden years severely overweight and out of breath.
