STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
The Todd familly of Naperville won the 33rd annual "Yule Log Hunt" Sunday at Morton Arboretum. Then it was up to Ron Nowicki of Downers Grove and Dick Winans of Glen Ellyn to make sure it fit into the fire. Half will be saved for next year's event. (Herb Shenkin/For The Sun)
Cade Todd, 6, didn't let the bone-chilling cold stop him from christening a 7-foot log with a healthy dose of red wine Sunday at Morton Arboretum. Cade, along with his parents Mike and Lisa, sister Tara, 9, and brother Ryan, 11, were the winners in the Aboretum's 31st Annual Yule Log Hunt. More than 200 people participated in the event this year.

FEATURED COLUMNISTS

Sports feature: When December arrived with the first lash of winter, Tom Pukstys couldn't help but smile. He was toasty warm, even though he was in a space seemingly as big as all outdoors -- 88,000 square feet of emerald turf and running, hitting and throwing space laid out before him. Bo Jackson's Elite Sports Dome, which officially opened Dec. 13, has a way of untethering athletes in the snow belt.

Local roundup: The St. Francis boys basketball team won the Glenbard West Holiday Classic with a 52-47 win over Nazareth on Dec. 26. Clint Pierce scored 27 points, which included seven 3-pointers, to pace St. Francis (7-4). Ryan Ferguson scored 14.

Boys basketball: Plainfield North has displayed a talent for digging deep holes and, just as important, a propensity for being able to climb out of them. This may not be the easiest formula for being undefeated after nine games, but so far it's working.

Boys basketball: Host Wheaton North would never recover from a 16-6 first-quarter deficit as crosstown rival Wheaton Warrenville South cruised to a 53-46 win Dec. 12. North (2-4, 0-2 DuPage Valley Conference) actually jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first minute of play. But that was the only time the Falcons would hold the advantage as the Tigers went on a 14-0 run after that.

'A man in sand'
In his most recent blog posts, Steve Panella shows a series of self-portraits in which his eyes were closed. His head is illuminated and his face looks peacefully at rest. The images are eerily foreboding, and they are his last. The 34-year-old artist died Nov. 29 from multiple, self-inflicted stab wounds.

Zookeeper living a dream
The steel gate looks like it was designed to restrain a charging rhinoceros. A scuffed sheet of plexiglass blocks the view of the creature that lies beyond the 3-inch-thick bars; it appears only as a big, snorting, blob-like thing. Before he opens the gate, Mark Gonka makes a request to a visitor: Don't stand between the animal and the water.

Wheaton retirees are the oldest on 'Biggest Loser'
When Estella and Jerry Hayes, both 63, retired from their respective careers as nurse and engineer in 2000 and moved back to Wheaton from California to be close to their children and grandchildren, they didn't envision spending their golden years severely overweight and out of breath. Yet Jerry has had myriad health problems related to his weight of 369 pounds and Estella, who weighs 242, has found herself short of breath just climbing the stairs.
